Recently we remodeled and in the process we realized our existing dining room table no longer aligned with our home’s new look and feel. I looked for a replacement but I just couldn’t find what I wanted. So I decided to refresh our existing table — after all, it was the exact size we needed — it just needed a little make over!
Below you’ll find an overview of the process. I’ve also provided a checklist of the items you’ll need if you’d like to do something similar. From beginning to end – it only took me 2 days – so it is a great weekend project!
To get started you’ll need:
- small electric hand sander and Dremel MM50-01 sander (needed for smaller areas)
- 80 and 220 grit sand paper
- small paint roller
- sponge roller (the kind designed paint cabinets)
- large paper plate (to roll the paint in)
- stencil of your choice ( I used a muddaritaville studio stencil – M0268L)
- 2 oz bottle of Folkart acrylic paint in Brushed Bronze (purchased from my local Hobby Lobby)
- painters tape
Tips
- Don’t be afraid to scuff up the table when you are sanding with the 80 grit sandpaper. The second round of sanding with the 220 grit sandpaper will smooth things out.
- Make sure to secure the stencil with painters tape. Some people use stencil adhesive spray but the tape worked just fine for me.
- The secret to working with a stencil is not to put too much paint on the roller. I normally squirt two lines of paint on a paper plate (about as long as the roller) and lightly roll the the roller through the paint. If the paint is too thick I add a few drops of water, mix and roll.
Have fun and let me know how your project turns out!
